A Hike into Kilauea's Halemau'mau Caldera

By Erich Zipse and Suzy Chaffee

Come with Suzy and me to visit Kilauea's Halemaumau Caldera

Kilauea has been dormant for a couple of months now. Suzy and I decided to visit our favorite volcano and even when Pele is asleep it is still one of the seven wonders of the world. Come with us on a morning hike into the dramatic Halemaumau Caldera.

We started out at the historic Volcano House and walked along the scenic edge of the massive caldera. In a few minutes, we entered a dramatic fern tree forest with trees as high as 30 feet. Surrounded by the clucking of wild Hawaiian pheasants and other exotic birds, we hiked in the high altitude coolness.

Once we arrived at the moon like setting 1200 feet below the craters rim, we saw what is called the Devastation Trail. Hiking out was amazing as we passed amazing views of the rim of Halemaumau. We had a nice relaxing lunch at The Volcano House.
